David Bowie - “I Dig Everything”

As of late, Tuneage has focused mainly on current and up-and-coming artists, trying to keep our collective fingers on the pulse of new, exciting music. But this is not our raison d’etre: we are equal-opportunity music lovers, and this week the Tuneage contributors would like to revisit some “older” music. Be it an overlooked gem from the 70’s or a classic from our closing decade, good music is worth sharing.

David Bowie, in his many incarnations, produced a string of classic records throughout the 70’s, but let’s look before the hits. My friend Kate described “I Dig Everything” (a commercial flop) as “Bowie in 1966… before Berlin, before Iggy, and even before Ziggy”, which is a strange Bowie. We instantly recognize him, but there’s no larger concept or character behind the performance. Indeed, the premise here is a guided tour of swinging London by Bowie. “I walk along beside the garbagemen and I dig everything”, he wanders around, carefree, in love with it all. If there’s any point of reference here, it’s Austin Powers.
